China – Shanghai Travel Guide

Travel Destination - Shanghai, China

Shanghai is the most populous city in China and one of the largest urban areas in the world, with over 20 million people in its extended metropolitan area. Located on China’s central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the city is administered as a municipality of the People’s Republic of China with province-level status.

CLIMATE

Spring and autumn are the best months to visit Shanghai. The peak summer months (July and August) can be searingly hot with temperatures above 95°F (35°C) and 80 percent humidity. Most of Shanghai’s rain also falls during this time. September and October can be windy, with the odd typhoon. In winter, evening temperatures often drop below zero (32°F).

LANGUAGE

Shanghainese, sometimes referred to as the Shanghai dialect, is a dialect of Wu Chinese spoken in the city of Shanghai, and the surrounding region. It is classified as a Sino-Tibetan language. Shanghainese, like other Wu dialects, is largely not mutually intelligible with other Chinese dialects such as Standard Mandarin, or even other sub-branches of the Wu language group.
